Round Robin Tournament Scoring Instructions
This is called Round Robin play which means that each team plays all the other teams on the program. Unlike an elimination tournament, where if you lose you are eliminated and must sit down, all the players in this tournament continue to play during the duration of the match. This allows for more play and that's what we are here for.
In the first round, as shown in the sample schedule at the bottom of this page, team 2 plays team 3; team 4 plays team 5 and team 1 gets a bye. Team 1 gets a bye because there is an odd number of teams and there is nobody for team 1 to play in this round.
Wins and losses count in this method of score keeping therefore each round must consist of 3 games. (for example: 501, Cricket and Corkers Choice for the 3rd game) When the round is completed the wins for each team must be recorded on the score sheet. Let's say team 2 won two games and team 3 won one. As can be seen in this sample in the first round when recording the wins for team 2 & team 3 you record the wins across. Looking down the left side of the score sheet you find team 2. Then you look across the top of the sheet and find team 3. The # of games won for team 2 is entered in the square where the two teams cross. (Team 2 won two games in this round) Next the wins for team 3 are recorded in the same way. (Team 3 won one game.) All of the other team wins are recorded in the same way.
It must be noted here, that if it is your desire not to consider the losses in your score counting, that the play format in each round may be the best 2 out of 3 games instead of a fixed 3 games per round, meaning that the 3rd game of the round is not necessary if one team wins the first 2 games in the round. The winner in this case would be the team with the most rounds won.
After all teams have completed this round and their wins have been recorded you advance to the second round and looking at the schedule sample again you see that team 3 plays team 4; team 1 plays team 5 and team 2 gets a bye.
At the end of the tournament the wins are added across and the losses are added down. It can be seen in this sample that the winner is team 5 with 10 Game wins. 2nd place is team 2 with 8 Game wins and 3rd place is team 1 with 5 Game wins. If there is a tie in the Wins columns you check the Losses Total lines and pick the team with the fewest Games lost. If there is a tie there also, you must have a play-off to break the tie. (Suggested - a single 501 game with all tied teams playing in the same game. The first team to go out is the winner; the 2nd team to go out is next and so on.) In this manner a win for the tied position is decided with one game.
The accuracy of your totals can be verified by adding the wins columns down and the losses columns across. These totals should match.
NOTE: In some cases it is impossible to play a complete Round Robin tournament because of time constraints. In that case, by pre arrangement the tournament is stopped at the end of a specified round and the winners are determined at that point.
