Wrap Up (Local Tournament)

Thank you to all the people that attended this years ADO All Star/501 Singles Local Tournament at the American Legion, and an especially big THANK YOU to all those that helped put up and tear down the boards and helped run the tournament.

With 14 men and 6 ladies, this year promised to be one of the best tournaments ever.  By the scores and games that I did get a chance to peek in on, it was!  The format was 501 Round Robin.  The ladies all shot each other.  The men were broken up into two groups of 7 with the top 2 winners in your group advancing.

First, the ladies.  Competing was Lisa Jones, Mary Ann Schick, Carol Dobek, Rhea Thomas, Debbie Snelling and Dee Smith.  Congratulations to  Lisa Jones for repeating as ladies champ with 11 points.  She'll be headed to Flint to compete in this year's regional event.

Next up, the men.  With only 14 people competing, this meant that only 1 man would be sent on to regionals.  In the Clubs group were Tim Jones, Chris Hampton, Jeff Holesapple, Big John Rumney, Jeremiah Millar, Rich McClelland and Mike Evans.  Jeremiah advanced, winning every game in this round.  Mike Evans also advanced from this group to the next round.

In the Diamonds group, we had John Findlay, Jon Ormiston, Gary Williams, Jimmy Smith, Michael Williams, Steve Pincombe and Michael Abbott.  Jimmy Smith and Michael Abbott advanced to the next round from this group.

The final round was also round robin, with each player playing everyone else 3 games.  In the first round, Jeremiah Millar defeated Mike Evans 2-1 and Michael Abbott defeated Jimmy Smith 3-0.  In the last round, Jimmy Smith defeated Mike Evans 3-0.  This game had Jimmy 4 points and Mike Evans 2 points.  In the other match, Jeremiah Millar defeated Michael Abbott 2-1, which gave each player 6 points, a tie.  The tiebreaker would be one game of 501, with only the winner advancing to the regionals.  Both players brought their "A" game to the board.  Jeremiah opened up with a 125 and Michael responded with a 76.  Jeremiah followed up with a 100 and Michael replied with a 140.  Jeremiah was still strong shooting a 78 and Michael slipped a bit only shooting a 41.  With 198 remaining, Jeremiah shot a 135 to leave 63.  Michael replied with his second 140 of the game to leave 104.  Jeremiah shot a 23 to leave 40 and Michael could only reply with a 58 to leave 46.  In only the sixth round of the game, Jeremiah hit the double 20 to win the match, and advance to the regionals.

Congratulations also go out to the following people who hit 180's: Jimmy Smith (2), Jeremiah Millar (1) and Michael Abbott (1).

Thanks to Michael Abbott for composing this beautiful description of the Tournament.
